Chester Racecourse is one of the UK’s smallest racecourses but also holds the honour of being its oldest. Located just outside the historic Roman town of Chester on the banks of the River Dee, the first recorded race here was held on 9 February 1539. In addition to being the oldest active racecourse in the country Chester is also the smallest, at just over one mile long. The circular track is famous for its long continuous left-handed bend, which makes the course extremely challenging for both horse and jockey. Due to this unique course, race days regularly attract the top trainers and horses for what are some of the finest meetings of the season.
Also known as the Town Moor Course, Doncaster in South Yorkshire is one of the largest and oldest racecourses in the UK, with meetings stretching back as far as the 1600s. As you would expect from a course with such a long history, Doncaster is particularly well known for hosting two of the world’s oldest horse races, the Doncaster Cup and the St Leger Stakes. Doncaster Racecourse is also a popular venue for outdoor concerts during the summer months.
York Racecourse in North Yorkshire is the third biggest racecourse in Britain in terms of total prize money offered, and second behind Ascot in prize money offered per meeting. Racing in York dates back to at least Roman times, with some archaeological evidence suggesting it may even date as far back as the Neolithic period. Racing at York attracts around 350,000 racegoers per year and stages three of the UK’s 31 Group One races – the Juddmonte International Stakes, the Nunthorpe Stakes and the Yorkshire Oaks.

The Stadio Olimpico in the ‘eternal city’ of Rome is the perfect destination for those sports fans that would like to combine a major match with a visit to one of the world’s most beau-tiful cities. An old stadium in comparison to most modern grounds, construction on the Stadio Olimpico began in 1927, with completion in 1932. The home to the Italian national team’s rugby matches as well as the Serie A games of Lazio and Roma, the Stadio Olimpico has also hosted the FIFA World Cup final and four UEFA Champions League Finals, most recently in 2009 when Barcelona defeated Man-chester United.
