Ayrton Senna’s Dominance (1987-1993)
Ayrton Senna’s superhuman Monaco 1988 qualifying lap is widely regarded as one of the greatest laps in Formula 1 history
Ayrton Senna’s dominance at the Monaco Grand Prix from 1987 to 1993 solidified his reputation as the greatest driver to ever conquer the principality. His first win in 1987 with Lotus showcased his masterful control in wet conditions, but it was his move to McLaren in 1988 that began an era of true supremacy. That year, he produced one of the most legendary qualifying laps in F1 history, outpacing teammate Alain Prost by 1.427 seconds – an unbelievable margin on the tight, unforgiving streets of Monaco. Senna described the lap as a near out-of-body experience, where he was driving on pure instinct, beyond conscious thought.
From 1989 to 1993, Senna was untouchable in Monaco, winning five consecutive times and pushing the limits of what was possible on the narrow circuit.
Graham Hill’s Fifth Win (1969)
Graham Hill’s fifth win at the Monaco Grand Prix in 1969 cemented his legacy as “Mr. Monaco,” a title earned through his unmatched mastery of the principality’s treacherous streets.
Driving for Lotus, Hill showcased his experience and precision, capitalizing on retirements from key rivals, including Jackie Stewart, to secure victory. This win was particularly significant as it set a new record for the most Monaco GP victories at the time, surpassing the four wins of Maurice Trintignant. It also marked Hill’s final Formula 1 victory, making it a poignant farewell to his dominance at Monaco. His five wins remained a benchmark until Ayrton Senna surpassed the record two decades later.
The 1982 “Race No One Wanted to Win”
The 1982 Monaco Grand Prix, often called “The Race No One Wanted to Win,” was one of the most chaotic and unpredictable finishes in Formula 1 history.
In the final laps, a series of bizarre events saw multiple leaders lose their chance at victory in quick succession. Alain Prost was comfortably in the lead until he crashed out in the rain with just a few laps remaining. Riccardo Patrese then took over, only to spin at the Loews Hairpin, seemingly throwing away his first-ever win. Didier Pironi inherited the lead but ran out of fuel on the last lap, as did Andrea de Cesaris, who was poised to capitalize. Derek Daly also had a shot but suffered gearbox failure.
In an incredible twist, Patrese, who had managed to restart his car, crossed the finish line first – seemingly unaware that he had won. The sheer unpredictability of the closing moments made this race one of the most unforgettable in Monaco Grand Prix history.
Kimi Räikkönen’s Early Exit to His Yacht (2006)
After suffering a mechanical failure, Kimi Raikkonen walks straight on to his yacht and enjoys the rest of the race from there
During the 2006 Monaco Grand Prix, Kimi Räikkönen delivered one of the most iconic and quintessentially “Kimi” moments in Formula 1 history.
Driving for McLaren, Räikkönen was running strongly in the race until his car suffered a mechanical failure, forcing him to retire on lap 51. However, instead of heading back to the team garage as most drivers would, Kimi took a more unconventional approach – he walked straight past the paddock, boarded a dinghy, and made his way to his private yacht, which was docked in the Monaco harbor. Moments later, cameras caught him relaxing in the sun with friends, sipping drinks, and seemingly unbothered by the race still unfolding. This nonchalant reaction became legendary, perfectly encapsulating Räikkönen’s cool, carefree attitude and solidifying his reputation as one of the sport’s most enigmatic and effortlessly entertaining characters.

Olivier Panis’s Shock Victory (1996)
Olivier Panis’s shock victory at the 1996 Monaco Grand Prix remains one of the most unexpected and chaotic wins in Formula 1 history.
Driving for the underdog Ligier team, Panis capitalized on treacherous wet conditions and a race of high attrition to claim his only career F1 victory. The race began in heavy rain, leading to multiple crashes and retirements, including big names like Michael Schumacher, Damon Hill, and Jean Alesi. Panis, who started 14th on the grid, skillfully navigated the chaos, overtaking rivals and making a bold strategy call by switching to dry tires at the perfect moment. By the time the checkered flag fell, only three cars remained running, making it the fewest finishers in a race in modern F1 history.
Michael Schumacher’s Controversial Pole (2006)
The 2006 Monaco Grand Prix qualifying session was marred by controversy when Michael Schumacher deliberately stopped his Ferrari at Rascasse, bringing out yellow flags and preventing Fernando Alonso from improving his lap time. Schumacher had set the fastest time but, on his final run, appeared to lose control and stalled his car in a way that blocked the track.
Many, including Alonso and rival teams, accused him of intentionally parking to secure pole position. The stewards investigated the incident and concluded that Schumacher had acted deliberately, resulting in him being sent to the back of the grid for the race. This moment remains one of the most infamous examples of gamesmanship in Formula 1, tarnishing Schumacher’s legacy while reinforcing the cutthroat nature of Monaco’s qualifying session, where track position is everything.
Lewis Hamilton’s Rain Mastery (2008)
Lewis Hamilton’s rain-soaked victory at the 2008 Monaco Grand Prix was a defining moment in his career, showcasing his exceptional skill in treacherous conditions.
Starting third on the grid, Hamilton faced an early setback when he clipped the barrier at Tabac on Lap 6, puncturing his rear tire. However, quick thinking from McLaren saw him pit early for fresh tires, a strategic move that ultimately played to his advantage as the wet-dry conditions caused chaos for his rivals. With supreme car control and fearless precision, Hamilton carved his way through the field, making decisive overtakes while avoiding the many incidents that unfolded around him. As the rain eased and the track dried, his perfectly timed pit stops and relentless pace allowed him to take the lead and build a comfortable gap. In a race where only seven drivers finished, Hamilton’s ability to adapt and push to the limit in changing conditions earned him a commanding victory by nearly four seconds over Robert Kubica. This triumph marked his first Monaco win and solidified his reputation as one of Formula 1’s greatest “Rain Masters.”
Charles Leclerc’s Home Victory (2024)
Charles Leclerc wins the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix, becoming the first Monégasque driver to win the race in 93 years
In May 2024, Charles Leclerc achieved a lifelong dream by winning the Monaco Grand Prix, becoming the first Monegasque driver to do so since 1931.
Starting from pole position, Leclerc led the race from start to finish, demonstrating exceptional control on the challenging street circuit. The race was briefly halted due to a first-lap collision involving Sergio Perez and Kevin Magnussen, but Leclerc maintained his composure to secure the victory. Overcome with emotion, he expressed gratitude to his team and supporters, acknowledging that previous disappointments made this success even more meaningful. The win was celebrated by the local community, with Prince Albert II visibly moved by the historic achievement.
Nigel Mansell vs. Ayrton Senna (1992)
One of Senna’s most famous battles came in 1992 when he held off a charging Nigel Mansell in the final laps.
After a late pit stop, Mansell, in the superior Williams, was significantly faster and launched relentless attacks on Senna. Despite the power difference, Senna masterfully positioned his McLaren to defend every inch of track, forcing Mansell to back off at key moments. For five nail-biting laps, the two went wheel-to-wheel, with Mansell trying everything to get past, but Senna’s precision and defensive skills proved unbreakable. This race exemplified why Senna was known as the “King of Monaco”, with a record six wins that stood unmatched for decades.
Juan Manuel Fangio’s First Monaco Win (1950)
Juan Manuel Fangio’s first Monaco Grand Prix victory in 1950 was a defining moment in both his career and the history of Formula 1.
Driving for Alfa Romeo, Fangio started from pole position and quickly established his dominance on the tight Monte Carlo streets. His incredible skill and racecraft were on full display when he avoided a massive first-lap crash at Tabac Corner, which eliminated nearly half the field. While others struggled with the demanding circuit, Fangio navigated Monaco’s challenging layout with precision and control, leading every lap to secure his maiden F1 victory. This win marked the beginning of his legendary career, which would eventually see him claim five World Championships, cementing his place as one of the greatest drivers of all time.
