Ben Stokes: The Career, The Legacy, The Legend

June 29, 2026
Ben Stokes announced his retirement from international cricket mid-spell at Trent Bridge on 28 June 2026. We pay tribute to one of England's greatest-ever cricketers and the moments that defined his remarkable 15-year career!

On a warm Sunday afternoon at Trent Bridge, mid-spell and mid-series, Ben Stokes walked off an international cricket field for the last time. Not with a wave, not with a farewell lap, but in the only way that ever made sense for him: having just taken a wicket.

The announcement came suddenly, yet somehow felt inevitable. After 15 years, 122 Tests, 252 wickets and 7,273 runs, England’s greatest modern all-rounder had drawn the curtain on a career that will be studied, celebrated and argued about for generations.

For cricket fans, it is a moment that stops you in your tracks. For England, it is the end of an irreplaceable chapter. And as the sport begins to look forward, it is worth pausing to appreciate just how extraordinary the story of Ben Stokes really is.

From Troubled Talent to National Treasure

The journey was never straightforward. In 2013, England Lions head coach Andy Flower sent a young Stokes home from an Australia tour following a 5am incident with teammate Matt Coles. The message was blunt: sort yourself out or waste your talent. Stokes later admitted he was already working with a sports psychologist at the time, learning to manage what he described as throwing his emotions into a glass bottle, a bottle that kept threatening to break.

It very nearly did, several times.

In Bristol in September 2017, a nightclub altercation led to an affray charge and Stokes being dropped from the Ashes tour. He was eventually cleared, but the reputational cost was significant. In June 2021, following the death of his father Ged and the ongoing mental toll of the Bristol affair, Stokes took an indefinite break from cricket entirely. It was a moment of remarkable honesty from one of England’s most important players, at a time when conversations about mental health in sport were still finding their place.

He came back, as he always came back.

The final chapter of his career ended with a similar off-field shadow. A nightclub incident in London in June 2026, this time involving a Saracens rugby player and a member of England’s security staff, meant Stokes missed the second Test against New Zealand. He returned for the third Test at Trent Bridge, told his teammates he was sorry, and then went out and bowled 11 consecutive overs in the afternoon session before announcing his retirement.

With the first delivery after the news broke, he took a wicket. Arms wide open, surrounded by teammates. That was Ben Stokes.

The Moments That Defined a Generation

There are players who have great careers. And then there are players who seem to exist precisely for the moments when everything is on the line. Ben Stokes was emphatically the latter. Across 15 years and three formats, he produced a catalogue of performances that would comfortably fill another player’s entire career. Here are the ones that will never be forgotten.

Cape Town, January 2016: The 258

England were in early trouble at 167 for 4 when Stokes walked out to face a hat-trick ball from Kagiso Rabada. What followed across the next two days was one of the most violent and brilliant innings ever played in Test cricket. Stokes hit 11 sixes and 30 fours on his way to 258, at the time the highest score ever by an England number six, the second-fastest double century in Test history, and the fastest 250 ever recorded. His sixth-wicket partnership of 399 with Jonny Bairstow remains a world record to this day. Alastair Cook described it as “frighteningly good.” It was the innings that announced to the world exactly what Stokes was capable of.

Less than three months later, Stokes found himself on the wrong side of one of the most dramatic finishes in T20 history. West Indies needed 19 from the final over of the World Cup final, an over that Stokes had to bowl. Carlos Brathwaite hit four consecutive sixes. West Indies won. It was a defining moment of a different kind: the way Stokes absorbed that blow, refused to hide from it, and kept coming back stronger said almost as much about his character as any innings he ever played.

Lord’s, July 2019: The World Cup Final

Ask any England cricket fan about the summer of 2019, and they will tell you exactly where they were. At Lord’s in July, England’s World Cup final against New Zealand appeared lost. England had slipped to 86 for 4 chasing 242. Stokes made an unbeaten 84, forced a Super Over when the scores were level, and England won the tournament on boundary count, the most improbable finish to a World Cup final in the sport’s history. Stokes was named Man of the Match. England had won their first ever Cricket World Cup, and he had almost single-handedly made it happen.

Headingley, August 2019: 135 Not Out

Six weeks later, Stokes produced what many consider the greatest innings ever played by an Englishman. Set 359 to win the third Ashes Test, England were 286 for 9 when Stokes came together with last man Jack Leach. What followed defied logic: Stokes scored 135 not out while Leach contributed exactly one run, and England won by a single wicket. The country watched open-mouthed. Those two performances in a single summer earned Stokes the BBC Sports Personality of the Year and the Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World award, which he would go on to win three times in total.

Three years after Lord’s, Stokes delivered again on the biggest white-ball stage. Chasing 138 to beat Pakistan in the T20 World Cup final at the MCG, England were wobbling at 49 for 3. Stokes came in, ground out an unbeaten 52 from 49 balls, and steered England to victory with an over to spare. It was a very different kind of innings to 2019, measured, selfless, entirely focused on the team, but no less important. England were T20 world champions, and once again, Stokes had been the man who made it happen.

The Oval, September 2023: 182 Against New Zealand

Back in ODI cricket for one last hurrah, Stokes produced a final reminder of his white-ball brilliance at the ground in south London. His 182 against New Zealand at The Kia Oval set a new England ODI record, a breathtaking innings that underlined why, even at 32 with a creaking knee, he remained almost impossible to bowl at when he was in full flow. It was one of the last great white-ball moments of his career, and The Oval crowd gave him everything they had.

Trent Bridge, June 2026: The Final Wicket

And then, in the way only Stokes could manage, his career ended not with a retirement speech but with a wicket. Eleven overs into the afternoon session, having just told his England teammates he was stepping away, he bowled Zak Foulkes and spread his arms wide for the last time in international cricket. His teammates engulfed him. The crowd at Trent Bridge were on their feet. It was less a wicket than a curtain call, perfectly, absurdly, unmistakably Ben Stokes.

Bazball and the Captain’s Legacy

Joe Root resigned the England Test captaincy in April 2022. Within weeks, Stokes had accepted the new role, alongside new head coach Brendon McCullum, and set about transforming English Test cricket in a way nobody had seen before.

What became known as ‘Bazball’ was more than a tactic. It was a philosophy: back your players, attack from the first ball, play without fear. England won 10 of their first 11 Tests under the partnership. Teams that had grown accustomed to England’s conservatism found themselves overwhelmed by the pace and confidence of a reborn side.

Ben Stokes celebrating with his team mates at Emirates Old Trafford

He’s always been there for the team, and we’ll always love him.

The Emirates Old Trafford faithful witnessed some of Bazball’s finest moments, including thrilling victories in that remarkable 2023 home Ashes series, as did the crowds at The Kia Oval in south London, a ground that always seemed to bring out something special in England’s players and their supporters. Old Trafford and The Oval became theatres for this new England; loud, partisan, and utterly gripped by what they were watching.

Stokes’s record as captain was 24 wins from 43 Tests, the best success rate for an England skipper in 45 years. That number does not fully capture the transformation in atmosphere and belief he brought to the dressing room, but it is a remarkable statistic nonetheless.

Results in Australia and India tested the limits of the method, with England beaten 4-1 in both series, and questions about squad culture surfaced during a difficult winter. But the legacy of what Stokes and McCullum built is undeniable. They changed English cricket, and they changed how English cricket feels.

A Career by the Numbers

By the time he retired, Stokes had amassed 7,273 Test runs at an average of 34.46, including 14 centuries. As a bowler, his 252 wickets came at an average of 30.98. His 136 Test sixes is a world record. Only Sir Garfield Sobers and Jacques Kallis have achieved a comparable all-round double of 7,000 runs and 250 wickets.

These are not just good statistics. They are historic ones.

What Comes Next for England Cricket?

Harry Brook is the likeliest successor as Test captain, and he has the talent and character to lead the side well. England have a squad with youth, ability and the Bazball mindset embedded deep within it. The foundations are strong.

But the identity that Stokes brought, the sense that when everything seemed lost he would find a way, cannot simply be replaced. It will take time for England cricket to recalibrate, and that process will be fascinating to watch.

With a Test Series against Pakistan coming up in August, and the eyes of the cricketing world now fixed on who England will become after Ben Stokes, there has never been a better time to be watching England cricket.
