Formula 1® to Reduce Race Distance by 15km from 2027

Formula 1 is set for another significant sporting-regulation change, with the FIA approving a reduction in Grand Prix race distance alongside new rules governing how long races can run when disrupted by weather, accidents or red flags.

From 2027, the standard race distance will reduce from 305km to 290km – a change expected to shorten most Grands Prix by around two or three laps. As confirmed in the FIA’s Formula 1 Commission statement, the adjustment accompanies refinements to the 2027 power-unit regulations, particularly around fuel flow.

While it may appear a small adjustment on paper, it reflects the wider technical direction of Formula 1 as the sport continues to develop its next-generation power units. With the balance between internal-combustion and electrical power evolving, teams are expected to rely more heavily on electrical deployment. That creates greater fuel-energy demands over a full race distance, meaning cars would require larger fuel tanks if the current 305km target remained in place.

Reducing the distance allows Formula 1 to avoid forcing major packaging changes to the chassis simply to accommodate additional fuel capacity. Instead, teams can preserve a more efficient and consistent car design while still delivering the flat-out, high-performance racing fans expect. The FIA has also agreed changes to the rules surrounding race interruptions. Under the current regulations, a Grand Prix has a maximum actual racing time of two hours, while the full event – including any stoppages – must be completed within a three-hour window.

From 2027, the overall three-hour limit will be removed. In its place, Formula 1 will introduce a circuit-specific “hard stop” time, setting the latest point at which all racing activity must conclude. The two-hour limit on actual racing will remain, helping to preserve the opportunity for fans to see as much competitive action as possible when a race has been affected by heavy rain, red flags or other delays.

The changes are intended to give race control greater flexibility when disruption strikes, while still accounting for important factors such as daylight, local operating restrictions and spectator experience.
