What is The Ashes?

The Ashes 2025/26 is the upcoming cricket test series between England and Australia, scheduled to take place in Australia from November 2025 through January 2026. This biennial contest is one of cricket’s oldest and most prestigious rivalries, dating back to 1882 when Australia defeated England at The Oval in London. Following that historic loss, a mock obituary published in The Sporting Times declared that English cricket had died and:

“The body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.”

The 2025 Ashes Series will consist of five test matches played across major Australian cities, with Australia holding the Ashes after retaining them in the 2023 series. England will be looking to reclaim the urn on Australian soil, where they haven’t won a series since 2010-11. The England vs Australia rivalry remains one of sport’s greatest contests, and the first test is set to begin in late November at Brisbane’s Gabba, traditionally known as a fortress for the Australian team.
