F1 Returns to Africa: Rwanda Signs Historic 10-Year Deal for African Grand Prix

For the first time in more than three decades, Formula 1 is heading back to Africa. In a landmark agreement that completes the championship’s presence across every inhabited continent, Rwanda has officially secured a 10-year contract to host the Formula 1 African Grand Prix, beginning in the early 2030s.

Formula 1 have confirmed that Rwanda will host the return of the African Grand Prix, marking their first Grand Prix in the continent since 1993.

Announced on 13 October 2026, the deal will bring Formula 1 to a purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, approximately 40 kilometres south of Kigali, marking the championship’s first African appearance since the 1993 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami.

With an ambitious new circuit, significant infrastructure investment and more than 100 million African Formula 1 fans, the announcement represents one of the championship’s most consequential calendar developments in decades.

A Historic Return After More Than 30 Years

Africa’s absence from the Formula 1 calendar has long been a glaring omission in an otherwise increasingly global championship.

South Africa’s Kyalami circuit last hosted a World Championship race in 1993, won by Alain Prost for Williams. Before that, Morocco staged its only championship Grand Prix in 1958.

Despite repeated efforts to revive Kyalami and growing interest from potential African hosts, a commercially viable agreement remained elusive.

Rwanda has now ended that uncertainty, securing a decade-long commitment that Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali described as:

“A landmark moment for Formula 1.”

As outlined in the official Formula 1 press release, the agreement extends beyond motorsport, targeting investment, tourism, employment and long-term regional development.

For seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton, who has consistently advocated for an African Grand Prix, the announcement represents the realisation of a campaign he has championed for years.

Bugesera Circuit: A New Challenge for Formula 1

Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of Rwanda’s successful bid is the circuit itself.

Designed by renowned circuit architect Carsten Tilke alongside former Formula 1 driver Alex Wurz, the proposed Bugesera layout promises a dramatically different challenge from the increasingly familiar collection of modern street circuits.

The planned 6-kilometre, anti-clockwise circuit features 17 corners and approximately 197 metres of elevation change, exploiting Rwanda’s mountainous terrain rather than flattening it.

Located near the new Kigali International Airport, the venue will incorporate natural hillsides, sweeping elevation changes, banked corners and strategically positioned overtaking opportunities.

According to the Tilke and Wurz circuit design plans, the intention is to create a demanding, flowing circuit that challenges drivers while encouraging competitive racing.

Altitude adds another technical dimension. Reduced air density could influence aerodynamic performance, cooling requirements and power-unit efficiency, creating a distinctive engineering challenge.

However, whether the ambitious layout translates into spectacular wheel-to-wheel racing remains to be seen. Elevation alone cannot guarantee overtaking, particularly with modern Formula 1 machinery.

What Does Rwanda Mean for the F1 Calendar?

Rwanda’s arrival raises an inevitable question: where does another Grand Prix fit into an already congested championship?

With Formula 1 balancing established European venues against lucrative international expansion opportunities, introducing an African round could intensify competition for calendar positions.

The inaugural race remains dependent on circuit construction and FIA Grade 1 approval, with 2030 the earliest anticipated starting point.

As explored in Autosport’s reporting, the agreement reflects a wider strategy to establish Rwanda as an international sporting destination.

For Rwanda, the economic ambitions are substantial. President Paul Kagame has positioned the project as an opportunity to develop local expertise, create jobs and attract international investment.

The announcement also carries significance beyond Rwanda’s borders. With more than 100 million Formula 1 supporters across Africa, the championship is entering a market with considerable untapped potential.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has similarly emphasised the importance of accessibility, grassroots motorsport and developing future African racing talent.

Nevertheless, the project will face scrutiny over its considerable costs, political context and ability to deliver meaningful benefits beyond the Grand Prix weekend.
