2026/27 Premier League Preview
August 21, 2026The Premier League returns this week after a summer packed with international football, major transfers and plenty of change. The 2026/27 campaign begins on Friday 21 August, when champions Arsenal host newly promoted Coventry City. From then until the final day on 30 May, 20 clubs will be competing for the title, European places and Premier League survival.

After the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Barclays Premier League football is back!
Arsenal are starting the season as champions for the first time in more than two decades. Manchester City are entering a new chapter without Pep Guardiola, while Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United have all moved into new managerial eras. Add three promoted clubs and an open transfer window to the mix, and there is plenty to settle in the opening weeks.
Here are the key storylines to follow ahead of the new Premier League season.
The Title Race
The biggest question is simple: can Arsenal do it again? Mikel Arteta’s side finally ended their long wait for the Premier League trophy last season after three consecutive second-place finishes. The challenge now is different – coping with the pressure and expectation that comes with being champions.
Arsenal have strengthened rather than overhauled, adding Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle United for around £75m, along with further attacking options. That continuity, combined with the quality already in the squad, makes them one of the early favourites.

Arsenal will be looking to fend off all-comers as they seek to defend their 2025/26 Barclays Premier League title…
Manchester City remain impossible to ignore. Six league titles under Guardiola underline the scale of the task facing Enzo Maresca, who takes over as the club begins a new era. City have also been active in the market, including the £116m arrival of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest.
That sets up an intriguing contest: Arsenal looking to turn one title into a period of dominance, while City aim to prove they can remain at the summit through change.
The Race for Europe: New Projects, Big Expectations
The battle below the top two may be just as compelling. Nine Premier League clubs begin the campaign with a new head coach, creating an unusual amount of uncertainty – and opportunity – at the start of the season.

Chelsea have appointed Xabi Alonso; Manchester United have made Michael Carrick their permanent head coach; Manchester City have brought in Enzo Maresca; Liverpool have turned to Andoni Iraola; and Tottenham have appointed Roberto De Zerbi.
For Liverpool and Tottenham, the early focus will be on how quickly their new ideas take hold. Both have the resources and talent to challenge for European football, but early momentum will matter in a league where the margins are fine.
Manchester United and Chelsea: Can They Turn Promise Into Progress?
Manchester United finished third last season, giving supporters genuine reason for optimism after several difficult campaigns. Carrick now has his first full season as permanent head coach, with Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos adding depth in midfield and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba still a reported target. An opening-day trip to newly promoted Hull City gives United the chance to make an early statement.

Manchester United and Chelsea will be hoping their respective new managers hit the ground running!
Chelsea are one of the league’s most intriguing unknowns. Alonso inherits a talented but unpredictable group after a 10th-place finish, with Morgan Rogers’ move from Aston Villa among the summer’s biggest deals. Without European football, the brief is clear: turn potential into consistency. A return to the top four would be a major step forward, and Chelsea’s trip to Fulham on 24 August will bring an immediate test.
The Transfer Window: Who Has Made The Biggest Moves?
The summer’s headline deals have already altered the shape of several leading squads: Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa to Chelsea; Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City; Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United to Tottenham; and Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle United to Arsenal.

Tottenham Hotsur will be hoping to kick on after their relegation scare last season
The window remains open until 1 September, so there is still time for more significant business. Arsenal and Manchester United are among the clubs expected to remain active, meaning several squads could look different again by deadline day.
Could Leeds be This Season’s Surprise Package?
Every Premier League season produces a team that exceeds expectations, and Leeds United have a chance to be this year’s surprise package. They have shown ambition in the market, including the signing of goalkeeper James Trafford, and Daniel Farke knows the club and its demands well.

Leeds United will be hoping for more after a promising 2025/26 Premier League campaign
Leeds begin against Nottingham Forest before a testing run of fixtures later in the season. Nobody is expecting a title challenge, but a comfortable mid-table finish would represent an excellent campaign – and if Farke’s side settle quickly, they could become a difficult side for anyone to face.
The Promoted Clubs: Survival is the Priority
Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City are all back in the Premier League, and for each of them the target is straightforward: survival. Coventry’s return is especially significant, bringing the club back to the top flight for the first time in 25 years – and their reward is an opening-night trip to Arsenal.

Ipswich begin at home to Sunderland, while Hull host Manchester United on the opening Saturday. The step up is unforgiving, but every season produces a promoted side capable of upsetting expectations.
Players to Watch
Arsenal will again look to Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard to lead their title defence. Erling Haaland remains Manchester City’s defining threat, while Bruno Fernandes will be central to how Manchester United perform under Carrick. Chelsea’s attacking talent will be under scrutiny as Alonso looks to unlock greater consistency.

The new season will also introduce the next breakout name. That sense of discovery – a young player becoming a household name or a new signing immediately finding form – is one of the reasons the Premier League remains so compelling.
