What is the PDC World Darts Championships?

If you’re new to darts, the PDC World Darts Championships is an annual event, held at Alexandra Palace, where 96 of the best darts players go head-to-head for the Sid Waddell Trophy and a total prize fund that will exceed £2 million, making it the most prestigious tournament within the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC).

Unlike traditional darts tournaments, the PDC World Darts Championships is broadcast globally, with millions tuning in every year to watch the very best professional darts players compete for the biggest prize in the sport in front of a sell-out crowd at The ‘Ally Pally.’ In recent years, the PDC World Darts Championship have been credited for featuring a women’s qualification route, which has seen a plethora of rising female talent enter the traditionally-male dominated sport, with Fallon Sherrock being the most notable inclusion in recent years to have gained widespread attention.

Initially, before the creation of the PDC, darts was dominated by the British Darts Organization (BDO), which organized the original BDO World Darts Championship which began in 19778. However, in the early 1990’s, a group of professional players decided to break away from the BDO to form the World Darts Council (formally known as the WDC), later renamed to the now widely-known Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). The split from the BDO into the PDC has allowed for the sport to expand commercially and increase its media reach, which has seen stars including Luke Littler, Phil Taylor and Michael van Gerwen and more become household names within sport, let alone darts.

Where can I Watch or Listen to it?

In the UK, you can watch the 2024/25 PDC World Darts Championships on Sky Sports’ dedicated darts channel, which holds exclusive broadcast rights for every match from December 15-January 3rd. If you prefer streaming the action, the matches will also be available on NOW TV. Both of these services require an active subscription.

On radio, talkSPORT will air coverage of the World Darts Championships, via the talkSPORT app, on DAB digital radio. TalkSPORT is set to bring listeners along for all seven rounds until the final with live commentary of the World Darts Championship action across the network.
